Qualifications were announced October 2013 and the 32 teams headed to Brazil for the wold cup have finally been split into groups for the first stage of the tournament. Groups are drawn roughly by seed ranking but exceptions made for geographic separation. Over all, each group will include either a top 7 team or the host Brazil, along with a African/South American team, Asian/North American team, and a European team. We’ve got the results of the draw below, with 2013 team rankings next to country name in parenthesis:

By The Numbers: Meaningless Stats:

  • Group B is the only group to have two top 10 teams while Group A has no top teams
  • Of the 8 groups, group B, group D, and group G each have 3 top 16 team, meaning at least 3 non-top 16 teams will make it to the round of 16
  • Group G has the lowest average team rank at 13, Group D is one behind at 14
  • Group G  has the lowest team rank sum at 52, which may make it the best group
  • Group A and Group H have the highest team rank sums, which may make them the worst groups
  • Group B has the widest large gap between successive teams at 45, between Chile (12) and Australia (57)
  • Group G has the tightest large gap between successive teams at 9, between Portugal (14) and Ghana (23)
  • If you drop the lowest ranked team from each group, Group B has the lowest team rank average at 7, followed closely by Group D (8.33) and Group G (9.66)
  • When you drop the lowest ranked team, Group D has the lowest standard deviation at 2.08, which means they may have the most competitive matches of the round.
