The Detroit Lions have made a few moves since hiring Jim Caldwell in January. I’m here to give you the general run down and catch up up if you’ve been hibernating with the literal feet of snow that has blanketed Detroit since December.

Players Cut:

  • K David Akers
  • S John Wendling
  • DE Israel Idonije
  • OL Dylan Gandy
  • LB Rocky McIntosh
  • DE Willie Young
  • WR Nate Burleson
  • S Louis Delmas

Of that list, the biggest surprises are that Nate Burleson and Louis Delmas have been cut. Nate had become a strong media presence for the Lions and something of a fan-favorite. Delmas was a hometown guy from the west side of the state and was known for his crushing hits. However, Nate’s mid-season accident which resulted in a broken arm, and for ever big hit Delmas delivered it seemed he had a big missed opportunity as well. Not necessarily reasons to cut those two players alone but when you take into consideration that it also afforded the Lions an extra $11 million in cap space, the numbers add up.

Players Signed:

  • S Isa Abdul-Quddus from the Saints – a 3 year player coming off a year where he missed 5 games is looking to replace Delmas over top the defense
  • WR Golden Tate formerly of the Seahawks – coming into his 6th year, Tate has increased his production each year and looks to compliment Cavlin Johnson as a #2
  • LB Darryl Tapp played for the Red Skins last year. The 8 year veteran has seen his best days behind him but should put up better numbers with the Lions in 2014 because the 2013 Washington Redskins were just terrible
  • DB Vaughn Martin played a few games with the Miami before he was cut after hernia surgery in October of 2013. Playing for a Teryl Austin defense is a good way to get his career back on track
  • TE Brandon Pettigrew resigned with the Lions on a 4 year, $16 million deal this past week. Pettigrew has had his share of growing pains, specifically dropped balls, at key moments in the game. Pettigrew is an interesting case because he has been utilized far less in the past 2 years, nearly halfing his targets each year. However, speaking to trainers, Pettigrew is one of the most physically impressive players on the team. Perhaps under Caldwell’s staff, Pettigrew will find new usefulness
  • RB Joique Bell signed a 3 year contract and feels like he has finally made it. A Michigan kid who played at Wayne State University before bouncing around the NFL and eventually finding a home with the Lions in 2011.
  • WR Kevin Ogletree has a 1 year contract to try and carve a niche in this league as a good #3 behind Johnson and Tate
  • LS Don Mulbach, 1 year removed from a Pro Bowl season, has signed with the Lions for another year
  • C Dominic Raiola showed he still has something to offer the Lions in 2013 and has signed a 1 year deal to return in 2014
  • WR Jeremy Ross has been resigned to a 1 year contract with the Lions
  • TE Kris Durham has been signed for another year
  • DB Chris Greenwood has a 1 year contract with the Lions

Players Unsigned:

  • QB Shaun Hill
  • WR Michael Spurlock
  • CB Rashean Mathis
  • OL Jason Fox
  • TE Dorin Dickerson
  • TE Matt Veldman
  • DL Andre Fluellen
