2013 coaches

The Coaching Carosel has finally stopped and all vacant positions have been filled. Let’s take a look around the league to see the new faces.

Cleveland Browns: Mike Pettine
Mike Pettine was formerly the defensive coordinator for the Bills last season. Previously, Pettine was the DC of the NY Jets for 3 years and the “right hand man” for Rex Ryan. Before that, Pettine held various assistant coaching positions in Baltimore while Ryan was the DC.

Minnesota Vikings: Mike Zimmer
Mike Zimmer was hired away from the Cincinnatie Bengals where he was the defensive coordinator for 5 years. For three of those years, Zimmer’s defense ranked in the top ten of the league in the categories of total yards and points allowed. In turn, Zimmer has hired former Chargers head coach Norv Turner as the OC for the Vikings.

Detroit Lions: Jim Caldwell
Jim Caldwell was the Raven’s offensive coordinator for the past year and change where he helped Baltimore defeat the 49ers at Super Bowl XLVII. Previous to Baltimore, Caldwell sat as the QB coach and assistant coach under Tony Dungy for six years in Indianapolis until Dungy retired. Caldwell lead the Colts to Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. The Lions have also hired Raven’s secondary coach Teryl Austin to be the defensive coordinator, and the Saints QB coach Joe Lombardi to the offensive coordinator.

Tennessee Titans: Ken Whisenhunt

Ken Whisenhunt will be the Titans new head coach. Last year, Whisenhunt helped reinvent Philip Rivers and saw the Chargers to the divisional round of the playoffs. Previously, Whisenhunt saw the Arizona Cardinals faced off against the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII as the offensive coordinator. The Titans have hired Ray Horton as defensive coordinator.

Washington Redskins: Jay Gruden

After two years of being the offensive coordinator  for  Cincinnati Bengals, Jay Gruden accepted the job as the head coach of the Redskins. Washington will keep Jim Haslett as defensive coordinator and has promoted TE coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator.

Houston Texans: Bill O’Brien

Bill O’Brien has accepted the Texans head coaching job. O’Brien has spend the last 2 years at Penn State picking put the pieces from the Sandusky scandal. Before that, O’Brien coached under Bill Belichick at various offensive positions. The Texans have hired former KC Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel as the defensive coordinator.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Lovie Smith

After 8 year, 3 divisional championships and a loss in the Super Bowl, Lovie Smith was released from the Bears after going 10-6 in 2012. After a couple years off, Smith was returns by Tampa Bay, this time as a head coach. Under Smith, former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier as the defensive coordinator.
